Local Information for Herne Hill
Herne Hill is a town located across two London Boroughs – Lambeth and Southwark. In Herne Hill is found Brockwell Park, and in Brockwell Park atop the hill stands Brockwell Hall, built in 1831. Brockwell Park also boasts many facilities such as a BMX track a bowling green, duck ponds, a cafe and tennis courts as well as a walled garden, children’s play equipment, paddling pool and football fields. Definitely something for everyone and easy to pass the day there.
Brockwell Park holds the annual Lambeth County Fair and is also home to the beautiful Brockwell Lido an outdoor swimming pool built in 1937. Stop by the pool and take part on one of their many classes – not just in the water! Join in a yoga class, pilates, an hour in the gym or just sit in the cafe and enjoy a cup of tea.
The only remaining cycle track in London is also found in Herne Hill. The Herne Hill Velodrome was built in 1891 and it was here that the 1948 Olympic Games’ track cycling events were held. Stop in with your car and take in a part of history. It differs from many modern day velodromes inasmuch as it is not a steeply banked track, but a shallow concrete bowl.
There are two grade II listed buildings – the Half Moon Pub, and Saint Paul’s Church. The pub is one of the few live music pubs in south London and has hosted a boxing gym for over 50 years. The church at the other end of the spectrum was built in 1843, and rebuilt after a fire in 1858.

Nuance signs up Samsung for mobile care, XT9

Nuance Communications (NASDAQ: NUAN) today inked a deal with Samsung Electronics to embed its on-device self-service software, Nuance Mobile Care, in select mobile phones. The relationship builds on one announced earlier this week to bring Nuance’s XT9 predicative text service to Samsung’s mobile phones.
Nuance Mobile Care, which lets consumers resolve common problems directly from their mobile phone, will be available on the Samsung Highlight, Gravity 2 and Comeback, as well as future Samsung handsets. Consumers can use the software to diagnose and repair configuration problems, make account inquiries, upgrade their account or pay bills. According to the company, data from past deployments and trials in North America and Europe has found that 60% of calls were resolved directly on the handset when its Mobile Care software was installed. The company also noted that the average live agent call costs about $5 and the average subscriber calls customer service once a month.
Samsung has been experimenting with new forms of text input of late, first announcing Swype as its keypad of choice of the Omnia II, as well as investing in the start-up, and then this week’s partnering with Nuance for the XT9 text input solution. Nuance’s XT9 will work on the Samsung Memoir, Behold, Blackjack and Blast, as well as handsets from HTC and LG.
Nuance, too, has had an active month, and a successful year, on all fronts. Coming off a year of many acquisitions, the company has been rumored to also be mulling a takeover of troubled transcription provider SpinVox. A Nuance spokeswoman would not comment on the speculation, but sources say the deal could be announced before Christmas.
